A new obsession; the Eiderdown

Ducks are all the rage.
Okay, but specifically Eider ducks. A quick history lesson: back in the 14th century, only the very wealthy could afford eiderdown comforters because of the rarity of the Eider duck and the superior insulation provided by its feathers. Over time, as things often do, it became more readily available to us common folk due to its growing popularity. Now, before you report me to PETA, I just want to say I love ducks! When I was little, one of my favorite pastimes was going to the neighborhood pond with my mom and grandma to feed those little feathery creatures.
Now, with that said, I also love to eat duck. So if we're going to serve duck on a platter at a beautiful five-star restaurant in NYC, or maybe for a celebratory New Year’s Eve dinner, we might as well use all of its elements and not let them go to waste. That’s where the feathers come in! You may already know this, but a lot of our pillows, comforters, jackets—basically anything plush and insulating—is made from some form of feather stuffing. But now I’m rambling; we’re here to focus on my new obsession: the Eiderdown!
Now that we know a little “history” behind this magnificent comforter, let’s talk about how you can use it on your bed! As you can see from the images I’ve provided, an Eiderdown isn’t like any regular comforter. It doesn’t drape over the entire mattress but simply lays on top. The functional purpose, as we've learned, is to provide an extra layer of insulation while you sleep; the aesthetic purpose is that it looks so damn cute!
I think the first thought for many people might be that an Eiderdown would only fit into a more traditional, farmhouse-style bedroom. However, I’d argue against that. This brings me to one of my rules: Rule #7: Don’t be afraid to mix different styles; in fact, I encourage it! As many of you know by now, I’m a lover of combining modern and traditional elements to create unique, unifying spaces that have a timeless essence. So, with that said, I believe the Eiderdown would make a great addition to any modern space by introducing an element of tradition.
Eiderdown comforters come in many patterns, as well as different quilting styles, so you can easily mix and match with your current bedding. Currently, there aren’t a plethora of Eiderdowns available on the retail market, so I always encourage people to either contact their interior designer or a local maker to create a custom and special piece just for them.
Beyond the aesthetics, the Eiderdown not only adds warmth to your sleep, but the comfort level is beyond words! The plushness and softness of the feathers will surely give you one of the best night’s sleeps of your life. With the holidays just around the corner, why not treat yourself or a loved one to this unique and special gift? It’s fit for any style and anyone. So go ahead, and make your—or someone’s—bed a little more beautiful!
