Beautiful — Home and Garden
Flowers are a girl’s best friend.
Not only do flowers add color and life to your home, but they also add, if you haven't guessed it yet, beauty! Any time of year, any occasion, any reason, flowers should remain a constant staple in your household. And yes, you can and should absolutely buy them for yourself.
Living in Charlottesville, VA, I have been exposed to so many flower lovers. I mean, almost on every corner this spring, folks are displaying their most precious and favorite florals. No matter where you live, there are so many options of where to pick up a bouquet or two: the local grocery store, local flower farms, local farmers markets, or if you’re brave, you can have a garden of your own! Let's explore each option in a little more detail.
The first and probably the most attainable is going to your local grocer and picking up some bouquets. My personal favorite is Trader Joe's. Not only do they have great prices, but they have a great selection as well. Additionally, they do a great job of sourcing local, so it’s a good way of being culturally appropriate to the floral gods.
The second is making a day of it and visiting a local flower farm. This option is a fun way to explore your community and learn a great deal about the local flower culture. You will probably get the freshest cuts this way too.
The third would be going to a morning farmers market. Just like going to a local farm, this would probably be the easier option of getting a fresher cut of flowers. You will also get great seasonal florals and can pick up some fresh veggies while you’re at it!
And last, but certainly not least, would be creating your own garden. Now this is the most fun because you get to explore and experiment with different specimens. This is definitely the most time-committing option, but this way you have your bouquet at your front door!
Now let’s quickly discuss the arrangements. Here are a few things to consider when arranging your bouquet:
Consider the color scheme existing in your home. I suggest picking out flowers that will complement the colors in your home, and not compete with them.
In correspondence to the former, make sure you have a vase that complements the arrangements as well. Not only that, but it should correspond with the style that you have created within your house already. Nothing says “what the hell were they thinking” more than a mismatched flower vase. If you’re unsure, I suggest a simple, clear, glass vase.
Make sure they’re getting enough sunlight and water. If you bought a bouquet with a “food” packet, use it!
Remember to cut off the ends of the stems to make the arrangement last longer.
For florals with lots of foliage, I suggest cutting some of those leaves off, that way your flower is the centerpiece. It also helps the flower live longer.
Okay, so now that we have a basic idea of how to introduce flowers into our home, let’s go and make it beautiful!
